Seeking a Permaculture Designer for Our Family Homestead!

Hello, friends!

Welcome to York Meadow Farm, a small, family-owned farm and homestead in the early stages of development. While we’ve owned this land for nearly 20 years and have been active at Farmers’ Markets since 2011, we are still in the beginning phases of long-term cooperative homestead planning. We're excited to embark on a journey to make our 19.62-acre property more sustainable and productive. Our land is a diverse mix of natural beauty and potential, featuring:

  • 10 acres of woodland

  • A 1-acre pond

  • 1.5 acres currently in market gardens

  • Approximately 4-5 acres of pasture

  • 3-4 acres of lawn surrounding a cozy log cabin and a pole barn/warehouse

Our Vision and Current Operations

Our market garden is managed by a dedicated tenant farmer who cultivates the land with care and expertise. Additionally, we operate a small fermented food business from our USDA-certified commercial kitchen located in the warehouse. This space includes a small walk-in cooler, vital for our current homestead operations.

We have a history of working with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) on high tunnel projects, which has provided us with valuable experience for future sustainable farming practices. Now, we’re seeking assistance in developing a comprehensive design plan for the homestead and beginning to take action.

York Meadow Farm also offers all-natural bath and body products made with beeswax, natural oils, plant butters, pure essential oils, herbs, and spices. We have spent years meticulously crafting recipes to develop mild, skin-nourishing products. There is potential for this operation to grow for the right person interested in learning more about soap making and small business.

Our Goals and Opportunities

We aim to optimize productivity and sustainability on our homestead by:

  • Establishing livestock such as poultry, rabbits, pigs, and sheep

  • Welcoming additional tenant farmers

  • Participating in WWOOF programs

  • Offering AirBnB or HipCamp stays for work/trade arrangements

By creating these opportunities, we hope to build a vibrant community of like-minded individuals passionate about sustainable living and farming.

Seeking a Permaculture Designer

To bring our vision to life, we're seeking a talented permaculture designer to help us develop a comprehensive plan. We believe that with the right design, we can enhance the productivity of our land while maintaining harmony with nature.

What We're Looking For:

  • Expertise in permaculture design

  • Ability to create a long-term, sustainable plan for our property

  • Innovative ideas for irrigation and other sustainable/regenerative farming practices

Our Next Steps:

Once we have a completed design, our immediate focus will be on installing an irrigation system sourced from our pond. This project is crucial for ensuring our market gardens and pastures thrive, especially during dry seasons.
